Dark chocolate is derived from a plant and the seeds are extracted from the cacao tree, the scientific name for which is Theobroma Cacao. This name is derived from the Greek words, meaning “food of the gods” and it is not surprising due to its exquisite taste and mood elevating properties.

Studies show that eating 45 grams of chocolate per week may lead to a 20% decrease in the risk of a stroke among women. Eating chocolate may also help lower risk of heart attacks by preventing blood clots.

Another study found that eating dark chocolate can protect your blood from inflammation. Furthermore, British psychologists experimented with hot cocoa and found that their test subjects had a much easier time counting back from a randomly-generated number between 800 to 999 than those who missed out on the hot drink.

Dark chocolate also helps strengthen your brain. Researchers at John Hopkins University have found that a compound in chocolate increases cellular signals already known to shield nerve cells from damage. 90 minutes after feeding mice the compound epicatechin, the scientists induced a stroke by cutting off blood supply. It was found that the mice who had been given the compound, suffered less damage to the brain.
