‘12 pc of blindness is caused by diabetes’

RAJSHAHI, April 08: Diabetic patients were asked to maintain disciplined life, take balanced food and conducting regular physical exercise for controlling the silent killer disease to live long.
Speakers at a discussion gave the advice and called upon the physicians and health service providers for conducting regular check up of the diabetic patients.
They were also asked to inspire the patients in building habit for balanced food and regular physical exercise to make their life normal and longer.
Civil Surgeon Office organised the discussion in its office premises on Thursday to mark the World Health Day-2016.
Various non-government development and voluntary organisations like Damien Foundation, Social Marketing Company (SMC), Light House, Tilottoma, BRAC, FPAB and Ashakta Punarbashan Sangstha (APOSH) joined the rally.
Civil Surgeon Dr Nilufar Ferdous, Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr Farhana Haque, Divisional Surveillance Medical Officer of World Health Organisation Dr Nurul Islam, Urban Dispensary Medical Officer Dr Farid Hossain, Senior Health Education Officer Sazzad Hossain and BRAC District Representative Jahedul Islam addressed the discussion, among others.
Dr Nilufar Ferdous said,  “12 per cent of blindness is caused by diabetes and most of the patients are not aware of it…It is the duty of all doctors of the diabetes patients to make them aware of the blindness and how they can take care and prevent it, ” she added.
Referring to various research findings she told the meeting that diabetes prevalence in Bangladesh would reach 12 Million by 2035 posing a big challenge to health system……
