NewView Oklahoma sets standards for services for the blind and visually-impaired

Dorothy Bailey is a very independent lady who wants to continue living in her own home that she and her late husband built. It’s the place they raised three children. But Dorothy is slowly losing her vision due to Glaucoma and has become increasingly insecure about completing daily living tasks.
The organization provided Dorothy the opportunity to try lighting, various kitchen aids, locator dots, and reading strategies along with her stand and hand held magnifier. Dorothy feels that her mind is much clearer now that she is able to read and cook again and she feels she is back to her old self and no longer afraid. The support she received has given her the confidence to stay independent.
“I will call New View Oklahoma again if my vision worsens so I can keep living independently in my home,” Dorothy said.
NewView Oklahoma provides low vision rehabilitation services and employment opportunities for people who are blind or visually impaired. Founded in 1949 as the Oklahoma League for the Blind, NewView strives to empower people through its community programs to achieve maximum independence.
“When a person’s sight begins to deteriorate, and the doctor tells them there is nothing medically that can be done to help, this is very discouraging,” said Cathy Holden, director of Rehabilitation. “People living with low vision often also live with depression. They have given up reading the newspaper, watching their favorite television shows, or performing hobbies they once loved. This is where NewView can help.
“Our team helps train individuals to do the things they love again,” she said. “We teach new skills and adaptive technology that allows a person with a visual impairment to cook again, or read books again, or remain living independently in their own home.”
