Five Questions to Ask Your Low Vision Doctor

Five Questions to Ask Your Low Vision Doctor

By: Jarrod Long, OD, FIALVS-Low Vision Specialist, Mid West Low Vision

Macular degeneration can make reading, recognizing faces, watching television, driving, and other everyday activities increasingly difficult—even when medical treatment is helping to stabilize the disease. A low vision doctor focuses on using your remaining vision more effectively. The first question to ask is:

What training and experience do you have in low vision care? Low vision rehabilitation requires specialized knowledge of magnification, contrast, glare control, field of view, and optical systems beyond conventional glasses or contact lenses.

How can you help with the specific activities I want to regain? A thorough evaluation should begin with your personal “wish list,” not simply a measurement on an eye chart.

What types of low vision devices might be appropriate for me? Depending on your vision and goals, options may include telescopic or microscopic glasses, high-powered reading lenses, electronic magnification, illuminated magnifiers, contrast-enhancing lenses, improved lighting, and nonvisual aids. The best solution is often a carefully selected combination rather than a single device.

What should I expect during the evaluation? A comprehensive low vision consultation may take considerably longer than a routine eye examination and should include opportunities to try different devices while performing meaningful tasks.

What training and follow-up will I receive? Proper fitting, instruction, practice, and reassessment are essential because even an excellent device is helpful only when it can be used comfortably and confidently. As macular degeneration changes, low vision strategies can also be adjusted to support continued independence.
