Key takeaways:

  • eSight Go uses two OLED screens to boost visual acuity for people with central vision loss.
  • The device is covered by the Department of Veterans Affairs or available by consultation.

LAS VEGAS — A wearable device called eSight Go, on display here at Vision Expo West, assists with central vision loss in people with macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other low vision conditions.

“This device gives you your central perception back,” Roland Mattern, director of sales at eSight by Gentex, told Healio. “We use a high-definition camera on the front of the device to capture the image … and inside the headset are two 4K-capable OLED television screens. We display the image on those screens, and those screens project that image across the entire retinal surface.”

The device can lead to significant gains in visual acuity and the ability to function, Mattern said.

“We have lots of users who have gone from 20/400 visual acuity to 20/20,” he said. “We have clinical proof that it has shown seven lines of distance acuity gain, six lines of near … with significant improvement in facial recognition, the ability to do activities of daily living, and quality of life.”
