Only veterans who are legally blind and members of the Blinded Veterans Association are eligible for the glasses.
WASHINGTON — Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, announced all legally blind veterans are eligible for a free pair of their Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses.
The announcement was made in a press release Friday and at the UFC Freedom 250 event at the White House on Sunday.
Only veterans who are legally blind and members of the Blinded Veterans Association are eligible for the glasses. Meta said that number may be more than 130,000 people.
“Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses are a transformative technology for blind and low-vision veterans — helping them read documents, identify objects, and live more independently,” the BVA website said.
It’s unclear whether the glasses are the latest model or an older one.
The smart glasses are fitted with an AI assistant, similar to Siri.
Meta posted a video example of the glasses in use with the user holding up a letter saying “Hey Meta, read this letter for me.” The glasses then read the contents of the letter to the wearer.
